DVD +/-

I never understood why we have + and - DVD's. When I went to go and burn my Photos to a DVD slide show i used a - disc, but unfortunately my player is a + disc reader. Does anyone know why they made two seperate versions? I can understand them putting region codes on commercial DVDs, but the +/- disc are just baffling.

  • Sup shen, I think there are several dvd formats because when the technology came out, lots of companies were developing discs, and no standard disc was created. I think within a year there will be just one format. I read that Microsoft have endorsed the - format.

    Thanks for that. Also a bit of the subject but after further reading I found out that the file system on DVDs is also important, Microsoft have implemented an ISO 9660 for Windows 95 OS, however this format of DVD will not work on standard DVD players.
